African slaves in NC in 1860

This is the slave percentages in 1860. One of the main reasons that there was a higher percentage in slaves in some areas as opposed to others is because the land in some places than others and in the flatter areas there was more room for plantations which is where a large majority of slaves worked in North Carolina. In the western region of the state, it is very mountainous, so there weren't many if at any plantations. There weren't many other ways for a slave to work, so there just weren't many slaves in areas that did not have plantations.
